The Loss We Struggle to Talk About
Family Estrangement Awareness Week is a new annual public observance held the week before Thanksgiving.
Estrangement touches more families than most people realize — yet it’s rarely discussed openly. FEAW exists to change that.
Our goals:
• Reduce the stigma that keeps estrangement a private shame
• Create space for open conversation without taking sides
• Connect people touched by estrangement to community and resources
Whether estrangement is an unwanted loss or a necessary boundary — whether you are a parent, adult child, grandparent, sibling, or friend trying to understand — FEAW holds space for all of it. Be one of the first 100 to help us launch in November 2026.
YOUR ANNUAL CONFLICT CHECK-IN
Why FEAW
Family estrangement is one of the most common — and least talked about — experiences in contemporary life.
Research suggests roughly 1 in 10 American families are currently affected. Yet the topic is rarely addressed without judgment, advice, or pressure to take a side.
FEAW doesn’t offer solutions. It offers something rarer: a neutral space to acknowledge that estrangement is real, that it is complex, and that the people living with it — on every side — deserve to be heard.
Some estrangements are devastating losses.
Others are necessary distances. Many are both at once.
FEAW holds all of it without prescribing what anyone should do.
FEAW is also a resource for people caught in between — the friends, siblings, and partners who want to support someone they love but don’t know how.
WHY NOW
Reduce Holiday Stress
Our timing is intentional. The week before Thanksgiving is when estrangement becomes most visible — in empty chairs, unanswered invitations, and the quiet weight of a holiday that was supposed to be about family.
FEAW places itself in that moment on purpose: not to fix it, but to acknowledge it, give people a framework and reminder that they aren't alone.
For mental health professionals, wellness practitioners, and community leaders, FEAW offers a ready-made platform to address what their communities are already carrying — alongside established efforts like Blue Christmas services and similar grief-focused holiday and end-of-year programming.

Other Ways to Get Involved
We’re inviting individuals, community and faith leaders, mental health professionals, and media to help us acknowledge this reality without taking sides.
· Anyone touched by estrangement — you aren't alone. Visit Resources to read shared stories and find ways to observe the week privately or with others.
· Clinicians and EAP Providers — FEAW offers practitioner resources, client-facing materials, and a Recognized Provider designation for organizations that observe the week.
· Partners and Sponsors — FEAW is volunteer-led and seeking organizational support. Your contribution covers launch costs and helps us build visibility for Year 1 and beyond.
· Media — estrangement is a story hiding in plain sight. We welcome interviews, features, and coverage of the 2026 launch.
OUR INSPIRATION
Giving Voice to Grief that has no Ritual, Casserole, or End
FEAW grew out of Unanswered Letters From Estranged Parents — a literary anthology of letters, poems, and reflections from parents and grandparents who live with involuntary estrangement.
No blame.
No advice.
Just honest witness.
While FEAW serves everyone touched by estrangement, Unanswered Letters gives specific voice to the parent and grandparent experience — one of the most underrepresented perspectives in published literature on this topic.

Help Us Launch
Both projects are volunteer-led.
We have to raise $1000 in July to pay a one-time fee that will hold our place in the National Day Registry.
Your contribution will help us meet that first goal and launch FEAW. For other ways to give visit DONATE.
FAMILY CONFLICT HAS NO BORDERS
We're Going Global
FEAW is founded in the USA and anchored to the Thanksgiving calendar — but family estrangement has no borders.
We welcome global partners who want to adapt the observance to their own cultural calendar and community context.
As funding grows, we’ll develop resources to support international observance. If your country or organization is interested, contact us at info@FEAW.org
